Comebuy - Garden City

Friends who have grabbed bubble tea with me would no doubt know how passionate I am for tea. Rather than the typical pearl milk teas or other flavoured teas, I am often known to order my green tea plain so that I can assess the tea quality of a store unhindered by frivolous embellishments. Which is why when Brisvegustation noted a very serious looking branch of Comebuy newly opened at Garden City, he recommended I go try it out. Not actually making any particular plans to go to Garden City, I still somehow found myself there by some twist of fate last Saturday morning, creating the perfect opportunity for me to investigate this further.

Compared to the CBD branch, this store was massive, new and upmarket. It had a huge display behind the counter with various types of tea, and considerable amount of seating behind (although noticeably they do not serve food yet, and there were no egg waffles in sight).

Ordering at the counter, the choices were somewhat more limited than the usual bubble tea places, with choices between regular tea, milk tea, fruit tea and premium tea. Toppings were optional, and as usual I avoided them. At this point, I have to say that whilst I didnt opt for a milk based drink this time, the creamccino option did really captivate me, and I would definitely be back to try this if nothing else.

Whilst other tea places have premade tea in very large canisters to use when ordered, this branch of Comebuy makes tea fresh upon order. Tea leaves are stored in the giant cylinders, which are ground up and put through a Teaspresso machine almost as if it were coffee. I was definitely keen to try out whether this method would have a largely different outcome to my regular brew.

Without a doubt, I ordered my standard Bi Luo Chun with no sugar and less ice, for pure unadulterated enjoyment. The tea was strikingly fresh and a delight to the senses without being overly strong. The Bi Luo Chun was, as expected, slightly bitter with a sharp bite to it that I love so much. The taste was crisp and refreshing, making for a highly enjoyable, premium cup of tea.
