Mr 6 Hotpot - Brisbane CBD

Long time readers would know, nothing piques my interest as much as a new hotpot restaurant. Even more so when it is winter. Having noticed the sign for Mr. 6 Hotpot ever since we dined at DooDee Boran, I've been keen to try them when they opened. The moment I was notified by Brisvegustation, we made plans to go immediately.

Mr 6 Hotpot is hidden away in the alleyway next to Roti Place, near Doodee Boran.

Despite it being a weekday lunch, there really wasn't too many other customers. Perhaps they were aiming for more of a dinner crowd. The restaurant itself was fairly small though and probably had around 10 tables in total.

Ordering was done via QR code but rather than paying for it on the app, we paid after the meal and they do not split bills. Although it is a malatang rather than a hotpot during the day, we couldn't adjust the portion of ingredients we got and the price wasn't by weight.

Sauces were a lot different from the usual though, Brisvegustation had quite a unique mix of sesame and other condiments, whilst I had some pickled garlic. Surprisingly there was no soy sauce or sesame oil.

Our food didn't take too long to come out, he had a dry pot, the portion was adequate and there was a good ratio of noodles to toppings. The more expensive toppings were of course limited, they cut up one piece of fish tofu into several slices to make it look like there was more, but overall he quite liked it.

As someone who can't walk away from a noodle soup, I had the malatang. The soup came in a minimal of mild spice, which was the limit of my tolerance. There was only one type of noodle which tasted like packet udon. My bowl was absolutely huge but the fillings were about the same as Brisvegustation's. It was largely soup. The soup itself was alright, not the best soup I've had but definitely not the worst, but it did taste a bit artificial. Although I ordered sliced beef, there really wasn't too much, but there was a fair bit of the less expensive items like basa and seafood stick. All up not bad value these days but for Malatang, I think I'll stick to David's at Myer next time.

Andonis - Yerongpilly

After our very pleasant experience at Andonis at Fortitude Valley, we took the opportunity to grab brunch at another branch, so we tried out Yerongpilly, which was fairly close to home. Again it was lucky that we booked early, because the crowd was immense. This was especially surprising given that it was located in a quasi industrial location.

Like last time, there were far too many customers to staff, however they were friendly and tried their best to keep up, which was more than enough, given we were in no rush. The menu was largely the same as what was in the Valley, but we changed up our order.

Starting off with a cappuccino, the large cup wasn't too small, it was fragrant and strong but I think the milk could have been a bit creamier.

Between the two of us, we shared the big breakfast. It was definitely lucky that we did, because this was not something that one person alone could have demolished. The plate was generous and there was a huge selection available. Our personal favourites were the poached eggs which were done really well and the ripe avocado. The toast could have been grilled a little longer, as could the tomato, but overall it was quite delicious.

We also had a plain croissant to share, this came warmed and provided a nice addition to our big breakfast. Warm, flakey and buttery, it was delicious. Next time, I'm definitely coming back for their croissant benedict.
