Eat Street Re-Opening - Hamilton

With the recent relocation of Eat Street, I was of course super keen to check out their new setup. Despite being in Perth when the tickets were allocated, I was lucky enough to secure a few tickets to go with some friends. Without giving too much commentary, below are some photos of our attendance on opening day.

Note the two massive legs on lamb on display!

We kicked off the eating with a sample of some candied apple. The apple was fresh and the candy was very sweet.

Gone are the Korean Sliders, in their place was Korean Pancakes.

Rather than pancakes though, we opted for the K-Town Cheesey Steak Fries. Cheese was deliciously stringy, beef was well marinated, but all the toppings remained at the top of the fries, and once we had eaten the top layer, we were left with just regular fries.

For drinks, I had the lemon lime bitters, which was just as sour and bitter as I like. My companion had the watermelon, raspberry juice, which contained quite a bit of pulp.

I also got to try some tornado potato, which was fresh and crunchy, although a little soggy after a while.

My pick of the evening was the Okonomiyaki. Unlike before, the cheese and pork belly were loaded on top of the pancake rather than mixed throughout. Other than this, it was amazingly cheesy and the pork belly was tender. The pancake had a good texture throughout and the sauces definitely kept it moist.

I also tried some of the chicken curry with roti. The roti was soft and flaky, but the curry was a little watery and not very spicy.

The spinach and ricotta ravioli was flavoursome and delicious, but one portion only came with three (very big) pieces, which was a little disappointing.

The highlight of our evening was the taco bowl. The bowl was really crisp and light rather than hard, and the salsa and guacamole inside was delicious and fresh.

I rounded off my meal with a dark chocolate filled churro. The line to order was very long, and its popularity was very much justified. the churro was pipping hot and freshly fried. There was just the right amount of filling inside of it not to be too much, but not too little either. I really enjoyed it.

Overall, a great night out. I cannot wait to go back soon.

Espresso & Matcha's Delectable Tarriance: Perth - Miss Maud's

Not wanting to leave Perth empty handed, before we left, I decided to grab some famous apple strudel from Miss Maud's when I passed through their Garden City Store.

They came in large and small sizes, I opted for a large one to take home. Interestingly, their boxes didn't come with lids, making it a slight issue to carry it back, so I had to make do with some cling wrap instead.

After the five hour trip on the plane, it got home safe and sound. We reheated it in the oven and I had a small piece. The pastry was a very good combination of crumbly and flaky at the same time. The filling, rather than just being plain apple, had also included sultanas in the mix. Heated up, it was a both comforting and delicious way to end my cross country trip.

Espresso & Matcha's Delectable Tarriance: Perth - U&I Cafe

Waking up from the long night before, I only had time for one last breakfast before heading back to Brisbane. Having wandered through Northbridge the night before, I was surprised that none of the places were open for breakfast, that is, until I glanced the massive "24 hr pho" sign at U&I cafe. Intrigued, we headed inside.

Service was super prompt. We were seated and ordered within five minutes. It was so efficient that I completely forgot to take photos of the menu, and before we knew it, my breakfast had arrived. I ordered the rare beef pho, which came with the usual sprouts. I really enjoyed the soup which was strongly seasoned, and the rare tender beef. The portion was quite generous, and the noodles also had quite a good texture.

My colleague and I also had the hot Vietnamese white coffee to start our day. Despite asking for my coffee to be less sweet, we were advised that it already had a set amount of condensed milk set in the cup. It was served in a warm water bath, which was a little confusing, as the espresso was quite hot anyway. Mixing it through, the coffee was still quite strong, and very very sweet, but I did like to not have the distraction of milky foam on the coffee though. It definitely kick started my day.

Espresso & Matcha's Delectable Tarriance: Perth - Noodle Night Market

Despite being super tired after dinner and a full day of work afterwards once my colleague told me that we happened to be in Perth during their Night Noodle Markets, I had to go and take a look (even though I was already quite full). Considering I just had dinner, I struggled to make room for dessert that evening, so this post will mainly consist of photos, and not many descriptions.

With the upcoming opening of Messina in Brisbane, I opted for Black Star Pastry instead of gelato. At $9 a slice, it was a little expensive, but well worth it. The cake was soft, strawberry was sweet and the watermelon was cool and refreshing. Despite having to walk 40 minutes to get back to the hotel, it was well worth the exercise.

Espresso & Matcha's Delectable Tarriance: Perth - Char Char Bull - Freemantle

After a big breakfast, we hardly stopped for lunch, but rather made it through to dinner before having some time to sit down for a serious meal. Driving out to Freemantle to admire the sunset before dinner, we had a table booked at Char Char Bull at the harbour for a delicious steak dinner.

Arriving at 6.15pm, we were one of the only tables there. I really liked the quiet and casual yet elegant atmosphere of the restaurant. Service was also quite attentive and warm as well.

Like most steakhouses, they had a large variety of steaks on offer, along with a selection of non steak items.

My companion settled with a red wine, whilst I opted for water, and took some time to admire the view.

Before we knew it, our food came.

My companion had the scotch fillet with a side of mushroom sauce. It came with the default side of potatoes. He quite enjoyed the dish and remarked that the steak was quite tender.

On the other hand, I had the T-Bone with pepper sauce. I had the potatoes changed to chips instead for my side, and my alteration was taken without any difficulty. The chips I had were very crunchy and tasty, especially dipped in the spicy pepper sauce. Unfortunately for me though, my steak was quite chewy and had quite a few tendons throughout, though to their credit, my steak was cooked rare as requested.

Between the two of us, we shared two sides. My companion was really keen on the onion rings which were super crunchy however were a little heavy on the butter. It came with a delicious miso dipping sauce that balanced it out quite a bit.

We also had the caesar salad. The lettuce was really roughly sliced and the croutons and bacon were also very chunky, a little too chunky for my liking actually, that it impeded me eating it without getting pieces on myself. Nevertheless it was very well seasoned and both the bacon and croutons were very crunchy

Espresso & Matcha's Delectable Tarriance: Perth - West End Deli

Landing in Perth in the middle of the night, the first thing on my mind after waking up was breakfast. Having only eaten three quarters of a cheesecake for dinner (forgoing the dinner served on the plane), I was famished and craved for some savory food. Wandering out of oru hotel, we found a quaint little cafe not too far and headed in for some breakfast.

I liked the rustic bohemian setup, and was strongly reminded of our own West End in Brisbane. Arriving quite early (due to the time difference), we easily got a table.

The menu consisted of quite a few breakfast items and coffee. Naturally, the build your own breakfast option captured our attention.

Drinks wise, my companion opted for the flat white, whilst I had the cappuccino. We enjoyed our drinks which were quite strong and gave us the caffeine hit that we needed so desperately. Whilst I have definitely had richer, smoother milk, this was not too bad.

I started with the eggs and toast, and was surprised that they came just as is on their plate (without the sides that we ordered). For $13, I found it to be quite steep for two eggs and two pieces of toast. The eggs were poached quite well, with a thick but definitely runny centre. The sourdough was considerably dense and very filling.

Our sides came right after our eggs and toast.

My companion ordered the double smoked bacon steak, which was extremely thick cut, and had a very very smokey flavour. Whilst he really enjoyed it, I would have definitely preferred thin cut bacon more.

My companion also ordered a bowl of kale, which was fresh and crunchy, but also a little steep at $5 for one little bowl.

We also shared a hash brown, which was really well seasoned and came in a neat little rectangle for our plate. The exterior was very crunchy and delicious whilst the inside was not too lumpy but also not too smooth.

On the theme of potatoes, I also got a serve of croquettes, which came as two long crumbed sticks on a sour cream and chive base. The batter for the croquettes were a little thick, but I loved the delicious well seasoned cheesy corny centre.

Craving avocadoes, I also got the mint and pea avocado for my toast. Whilst the avocado was ripe, rich and creamy, the added peas in the mixture didn't really work for me due to the change in texture.
