Another weekend, another date night. With last week's highly successful dinner, this time it was my turn to impress the illustrious celebrity with my decision making prowess. Given his Italian heritage, I thought it would appeal to have our dinner at La Lune, a cozy and relatively secluded Euro style wine bar found along the quieter end of Fish Lane in South Brisbane.
Wandering over at our reserved time of 7pm it was lucky that we had made a booking as the place filled up very quickly. I loved the dim cozy ambiance and the super strong air conditioning.
Whilst they did have an a la carte menu, we were pretty set on having the tasting menu to sample most of their offerings. For $60pp, this was a very good deal compared to the a la carte prices, and for an extra $50, we could have paired wines, but since Adam doesn’t drink, we decided not to match with drinks.
Having said that, I do always appreciate bubbles, so I had a glass of Prosecco (just because I could). He had water.
First on the tasting menu was the Oyster, Lemonade and Sorrel Snow. He really enjoyed them and fresh and deliciously chilled with hints of sweet and sourness to them.
Second course was the Crudo, Daikon, Chilli, Finger Lime and Viet Mint. The crudo of the evening was a barramundi. I liked the crisp and refreshing daikon, especially with the added tang of finger lime, but wish that there could have been more by way of actual crudo.
Our third course was the Wagyu Tataki, Shiitake, Pickled Ginger and Sour Plum. It took a very long time to show up. Having eaten tataki from quite a few places, this was surprisingly cooked to a light pink compared to the usual light sear on the outside. The wagyu though was still quite tender and thinly sliced. The shiitake gave it some extra depth and taste whilst ginger and plum added sweetness.
Our fourth course eventually came after an extensive wait due to a kitchen mix up whereby we were served our neighbours full sized mains (we really should have just eaten it). This was the Chicken, Mushroom Ketchup, Asparagus and Braised Saltbush. The chicken breast was a little bit dry but this was rectified with mushroom ketchup and the asparagus was a little firm, but we still ate this fairly quickly as we were famished from the wait.
Dessert was the best course of all that evening, this was the Chocolate cake, mandarin mascarpone, blueberry and anise myrtle. The cake was irrefutably moist and decadent without an excess of sweetness. I liked the citrus tang in the mascarpone and the tartness of the blueberries.
As an apology for the extensive wait times we experienced that night between courses, we had a complimentary glass of NV Port Nieport Ruby to share. It was a syrupy sweet wine, which complemented dessert wonderfully.
Although my experience at La Lune was mixed, at least I had great company to keep me entertained and enthralled throughout the evening.
