Had noted the construction of Via He in the old lodgings of Mr Fitz in the Valley when we walk past from the City and we had long been curious about whether or not the food would be any good. Finally bit the bullet and tried it out for dinner last week.
Arriving fairly early at 6pm, the shop was almost empty except for us and one other table but there was a constant stream of take away orders and deliveries. We ordered at the counter and had our pick of the seats. The restaurant was not air conditioned either, so it was lucky that we went on a day that wasn't too hot.
My companion had a young coconut and I had an iced coffee. My companion found the coconut to be fresh but with a hole only big enough to put the straw into it, he was unable to enjoy the coconut flesh. My Viet Iced Coffee was extremely sweet but not very strong. Next time I'll definitely go for the black option.
Being the only ones dining in, food was fast.
Sharing some entrees, we had a serve of spring rolls and chicken wings. Both were freshly fried and so hot that we had ti wait for a few minutes before we could eat it. The spring rolls were fairly average, crisp and with a decent meat and veggie filling that needed a bit more flavour. The chicken wings though, although crisp, the batter was unbelievably thick and the chicken was extremely bland, as it it had been deep frozen for extensive periods of time.
Ordering a bowl of rare beef pho to share, we were surprised that the sprouts and herbs were already incorporated into the bowl so we had no option to exclude some of the herbs. The bowl itself was quite small, the portion of noodles was few and the beef was even less. The beef was also quite overcooked and the soup lacked depth. I was fairly disappointed.
This was the Vietnamese Rice Noodle Salad with Pork. For some reason it had no rice noodles in it and only small amounts of pork among all the cabbage and cucumber. Definitely not something I would order again.
