Gemelli - Fortitude Valley

I had received a recommendation from a coworker a while ago to try out the pizza at Gemellis as it was his pick for some of the best locally. It actually took a while for us to get there largely because they were often booked out and it took us around two attempts before we could get a table at the end of the week for dinner.

It was a full house again and we were given some pretty good seats near the window. The inside was dark and moody, making it not particularly aesthetic for photos, but adding to the ambience of a romantic date night.

The menu was fairly standard for Italian fare, there was a generous range of antipasti, pizzas, pastas as well as more substantial mains. Service was very professional and courteous.

Starting off with drinks, Dr L had a coke whilst I had a Rose, both were crisp and refreshing, whetting our appetites for what was to come.

First to arrive was our starters, the Arancini Ai Funghi. Comprised of a crumbed rice ball with mixed mushrooms, buffalo mozzarella, truffle oil and parmesan, it came as a serve of three on a bed of napoli sauce. I was actually surprised at being disappointed by these. The crumbed batter was extremely thick and hard without being too crispy, almost making it a little difficult to bite into. The rice was also not overly flavoursome and we had to rely on the napoli sauce for much of the taste. If I came back, I definitely would not be ordering the arancini again.

On the other hand, our pizzas were absolutely superb. The first one we had was the Pavia which was topped with fior di Latte, zucchini, chilli fennel pork sausage, gorgonzola and truffle oil. Compared to our other favourites, the crust on the pizzas at Gemelli was substantially thicker, however this wasn't an issue as the crust was extremely delicious with a very light and airy texture that was also chewy as well. The toppings complemented each other well, especially the pork sausage and zucchini. I did find the truffle oil to be somewhat light in taste though, especially compared to truffle pizzas I have ordered from other places.

Our other pizza was from the rosa range, balancing both red and white. This was the Griffiti, which was topped with fior di latte, prosciutto di parma, rocket and shaved reggiano. This was a lot sharper and more flavoursome than the Pavia. The proscuitto was deep and savoury whilst the reggiano was strong and robust in flavour, all of these flavours were so strong that it really overpowered my enjoyment of the red tomato base though. All of this was served atop a delicious fluffy base which was equally as delicious as our other pizza. This is definitely a pizza worth coming back for. We really enjoyed our time at Gemelli and would definitely be back at a later date perhaps to try their pasta offerings.
