Last weekend we took the opportunity to further Dr L's driving skills so that perhaps one day his work would allow him to drive unaccompanied. Ordinarily we don't go too far for food, so I had to research further places to get to, which we would ordinarily not be able to get by way of public transport. That is how we ended up going to the extremely popular and very scenic Manly Boathouse, upon the recommendation of our friend Brisvegustation.
While there was a formal dining area inside, we had our sights set upon the outdoors fish and chippery since this was Dr L's favourite food. The menu was clearly set on the wall and there was a reasonably long queue for food. Once you order, they will text you when it's ready for pick up.
Our cold dishes came back with me when I ordered, this was the small salad and one serve of moreton bay bugs.
We had two types of salad, garden and coleslaw. These were fresh and generously packed into the container. I noted that the vinaigrette for the garden salad was added upon ordering to ensure that the leaves wouldn't get soggy, and they definitely didn't. The bugs were also fresh, cooked in salt water and served with a wedge of lemon. On its own, it was a little bland but served with cocktail sauce, it was wonderful.
Despite the long line, our cooked food came out within 10 minutes of ordering.
Between the two of us, we had two pieces of cod, one battered one crumbed and a scoop of chips. I ordered both types of batter to try them out and compare. The crumbed one was fresh and crispy but nothing out of the ordinary. The battered one though was really something special. Crisp and crunchy without being oily and whilst retaining the moisture of the cod inside, this has to be one of the best battered cod fillets I've had in some time. The chips were also fresh and crisp too, for the price, it was a generous amount.
We had a really great time at Manly Boathouse, next time we will have to come back and try the restaurant.
