Sarni - Ascot

Lately, it appears that sandwiches have been having a moment. In particular, there has been a significant influx of high end sandwich shops and it seems to be quite popular, at least on my social media feed. With that in mind, Sarni was on my radar and I was pleased to be in the area after picking up some noodles from Taros for my recent ramen venture.

I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, but I was surprised to see a full sized kitchen and tables and chairs set out full restaurant style. I suppose I was anticipating a more casual, smaller setup.

Ordering was at the counter, there was just less than a dozen sandwich options with a wide variety of proteins. The drinks menu was fairly formidable too. Prices were steep, but the restaurant was packed.

My food and drink came out very promptly after ordering. Plating was pretty spot on.

For drinks, I had the Thaiger Matcha, being half a thai milk tea, half a matcha. The Thai milk tea was rich and strong as well as fairly sweet, being reasonably tempered by the matcha, which was served without sweetener and quite refreshing. The serve of beef tallow fries was very steep at $12, frankly the portion was too big for me but when I asked for a side portion, they said they only had one size. Other than this though, it was fairly faultless. Crisp, hot, well seasoned with chicken salt, it was delicious.

For my sando, I chose beef brisket. It had crossed my mind to order double meat because more protein is always better than less protein, but in this case I am glad I stuck to the original. Packed with herbs, pickles and fried shallots, this sando was a flavour hit. The brisket was also fall apart soft and tender with a deep umami savouriness. The bread which is allegedly made in house also struck a good balance of being dense but also retaining a level of fluffiness. Overall this was definitely a delicious sandwich and a wonderful meal, but for the total price of $45 for myself only, it was undoubtedly expensive for what it was. Whilst I really enjoyed it, I do think the price would really discourage a return visit.
