As mentioned in an earlier post, Sam's chicken opened in a shared shopfront with Orange Tea on the ground level of Brisbane One. Since going to Orange Tea the first time, Sam's Chicken had constantly been on my mind given the intoxicating smell of deep fried salt and pepper which had constantly assaulted my nose as I lined up for bubble tea. It didn't take us long to make time to go try it out.
The menu was very reminiscent of Taiwanese Fried Chicken as you would get in the night markets of Taipei or Hot Star with full sized chicken fillets, popcorn chicken as well as a huge assortment of deep fried sides.
It did take a little while for us to get our food but to their credit they were super busy and staff were working non stop.
Starting off with the weaker element of the night, the deep fried turnip cakes were likely the frozen variety which you could get at asian supermarkets. Although the coating was flavoursome with the infinitely moreish salt and pepper, there was a definite lack of turnip flavour in the turnip cake.
Our other side was tornado potato and this was probably the best I've had in Brisbane. Having enjoyed them overseas, their aim is to essentially make a freshly fried pringle on a stick. So the aim is for a dry, crisp potato with as little moisture as possible, to this point, Sam's did the best job I've had locally, far exceeding the oily mess that you get in Eat Street. Seasoning was also very much on point. Onto the main even though, we had one chicken fillet each. This was huge as can be seen with Dr L's hand as a reference. It was served piping hot, straight out of the fryer and we definitely had difficulty holding onto it for the first few minutes. It was thick, crunchy and coated with just the right amount of potato starch, making for an enjoyable (albeit very fattening) dinner for the both of us. With a bubble tea in one hand and a fried chicken fillet in the other, we both agreed that this is as close as you could get to a real Taipei experience without leaving Brisbane. We will definitely be back soon.
