Oishi Teppanyaki & Cafe - Slacks Creek

Haven't had a decent Teppanyaki in Brisbane for quite some years since our favourite store closed in Sunnybank half a decade or so ago. With the recent focus on Yakitori and Robatayaki, my attentions have long been diverted, that is until I received an invitation from Oishi Teppanyaki and Cafe, a quaint suburban restaurant at Slacks Creek, along Kingston Road.

Arriving at 6.30 on Saturday, we were greeted at the door by the friendly manager. The setup consisted of one large bench top with three sides for customers to sit at and watch the chefs as they went about their art. There were also other tables for customers when the bench was full, it didn't come with as good a show, so I would definitely recommend booking ahead to get a good seat.

Menus were soon provided. I particularly liked how there were options for singular and group dining in addition to some traditional options. Rather than a meal for two, we opted on two meals for one that night.

First to arrive was our shared appetiser of tuna sashimi. The portion was fairly generous and the pieces were quite thick cut and fresh. I liked how the wasabi wasn't the typical tube wasabi. I also enjoyed the crisp salad.

Soon after, salad and soup arrived. We enjoyed the fresh salad with an appetising french dressing, we only wished there could have been a little more dressing for the salad. The white miso was also tasty, without being overly salty. I would have liked some tofu pieces in it too.

As we munched on our starters, we enjoyed quite the show from the chef who performed quite a few stunts which involved quite a bit of flying food and we had an absolutely wonderful time watching as he expertly prepared our food.

Our mains came out soon after. First up was the Wagyu. The portion was very generous, and the pieces were cooked medium rare, we opted for teppanyaki sauce. The beef was wonderfully tender and quite flavoursome with a strong meaty texture. Unlike other wagyu I've had in the past though, it didn't melt in my mouth as much as I would have liked.

What I really enjoyed was the Moreton Bay Bug. For a single main serving, we got five halves of moreton bay bugs served on a bed of stir fried vegies. We had this dish with garlic and lemon sauce. It was a very generous portion, and the bug was very well caramelised. I liked how the tangy lemon had infused into the bug meat.

To finish off our meal, we also had a serve of fried rice. This was a delectable short grain rice with a smooth texture. It was stir fried with egg and vegies, and made for a wonderful conclusion of a very enjoyable and entertaining meal.

Espresso and Matcha were invited guests of Oishi Teppanyaki and Cafe, but as always, our opinions are solely our own.
