Barolo Ristorante - Toowong

Having been to the iconic Mariosarti not too long ago, I was quite disappointed when I heard it had closed down. But before long, a new venture by the name of Barolos had established itself in their old lodgings. Also specialising in Italian, I was super keen to try it out, and luckily for me, I had the pleasure of being invited to try it out for dinner last Saturday, naturally, I brought my favourite instagram celebrity who has now been downgraded to my lighting accessory, FoodieAdam.

Arriving at 6 for our reservation, the restaurant was starting to fill, and was near capacity by the time we left. I really liked the dim moody lighting, which really added to the ambiance.

As before, there is a private fucntioni room that is available for

Our friendly and engaging waiter soon came and provided menus. There was an extensive range of entrees, but to lessen our indecisiveness, we were only required to select mains and drinks.

To start off, we had a pair of espresso martinis, because what can better than caffeinated alcohol to kick start a great night? Both were delightfully smooth, sweet and gave us just the right hit of caffeine to really start up our appetites.

Before long, our assorted entrees arrived, and our table was completely filled up.

The main platter comprised of almost all the entrees on the menu, not limited to Arancini, Prosciutto wrapped scallops, cold cuts, baby octopus and atlantic squid. I loved the texture clash that the prosciutto and scallops provided. The calamari was also unbelievably tender with a wonderfully crispy exterior that we really enjoyed, but our favourite of the whole dish was without a doubt the Arancini balls which were super crunchy on the outside with a fluffy rice interior, unfortunately though Adam was halfway through the second one by the time I realised, and so I only had half.

In addition to the platter, we had the Scamorza, a wood smoked white Mozzarella lightly grilled with lemon smoked sea salt.  Like an Italian take on Haloumi, I found the cheese to be wonderfully carmelised outside with a soft chewy centre. As always, the lemon gave it some much needed tang and balance.

We also had some Grilled King Prawns, which were juicy, firm and seasoned lightly with salt, definitely enjoyable.

Of course, we also shared a small basket of bread. In this instance, we had the garlic bread. With a nice crisp toasty exterior and a soft fluffy interior and just the right amount of garlic.

Between courses, we had a brief Champagne interlude. Bubbly and refreshing, I loved every last drop.

Being an avid meat eater, I could not go past the rib fillet. Cooked rare and served with tomatoes and truffle mash. The flavours of the pepper, tomato and truffle were all spot on and executed wonderfully. The only improvement that I would suggest is that it was a little chewier than expected and texture could have a slight improvement.

As if one steak wasn't enough, Adam decided that our second main should also be the linguine con bistecca funghi. Comprising of  seared wagyu, sautéed forest mushroom in a light creamy sauce finished with truffle parmesan and fresh Italian herbs. Compared with the rib fillet, the wagyu was far richer and smoother in texture, with delicious charred edges which I loved. The pasta was cooked al dente and truffle made it all the more wonderful.

To ensure our veggie quota was met for the day, we also shared a bowl of Insalata di Rucola, comprising of wild rocket, mint orange and fennel salad, White Balsamic. It was refreshing and light, making a great accompaniment to our hearty steak and pasta dishes.

No meal with Adam is complete without dessert, and there was no doubt what caught my eye from the menu.

Of course, this was the Tiramisu with raspberry and brownie dust. The ladyfingers were delectably light and sprinkled with espresso (espresso to start and to finish the night), and the marscapone was lightly sugared as I prefer whilst the raspberry added hits of fruitiness. Without a doubt, this was an ideal way to round off a fantastic dinner.

Espresso and Matcha were invited guests of Barolo Ristorante, but as always, our opinions are solely our own.
