Izakaya Rokun - Runcorn

One of my board game buddies has long recommended that I try out Rokun Izakaya, a new Korean run Japanese eatery in Runcorn plaza. Situated next to Moge tea, it has become fairly popular, thus making it even more difficult to source a parking spot during peak hours. Nevertheless determined, I made a point to try it out.

Arriving early, the restaurant was fairly empty. We were the only ones there along with another table. Service was fast.

There were quite a few varieties on the menu, notably with Japanese set meal options, sushi, sashimi and hot pot. We made our order without too much indecision.

More alike Korean restaurants than Japanese, we were soon presented with a dish of sides, being pickled seaweed. Sweet and textured, I enjoyed it, but it's definitely an acquired taste.

Kicking off our meal with a medium sashimi, cuts were generous, but I didn't find the sashimi to be overly fresh. The tuna still had a few bones in it which we had to pick out as we were eating. I did enjoy the salmon though which was the freshest of the dish, and fresh wasabi is always appreciated.

Our main event of the evening though, was the sukiyaki hot pot, which came to sit upon our electric stove top on our table.

Although it looked a little dry to begin with, there was considerable gelatinised soup in the pot which melted with heat to make for a sweet bubbly mixture of soy, beef, mushrooms, noodles and veggies. The portion size was generous and ample for the 3 of us. The beef was reasonably tender, but we had to remove it from the pot before it became overcooked. Adding a side of rice and two bowls of udon, it was an enjoyable meal, albeit a little on the sweeter side.
