David's Noodle & Hotpot - Brisbane CBD

Pre movie dinner and we decided to grab a quick dinner before watching Captain Marvel after work. Having seen that David's recently opened their second store in the the Myer Centre, bringing the total malatang options to two in the city, we decided to check it out.

While there were some set dumpling and noodle dishes, we were only there for one thing. Malatang.

So we grabbed a bowl each and got started.

Being the end of the day, the fridge wasn't very stocked, but it was still far better than other experiences we'd had before.

Meat was in particularly short supply. I found it odd that the beef slices would be bundled up in cling wrap. Perhaps for hygiene reasons, but then the marinated options weren't.

It didn't take long for us to load our bowls up.

Lining up at the counter, we could choose one of seven soups to base our selection in and one of six sauces in which to accompany our meal.

Weighing up, prices were $2 more per 500g compared to their Sunnybank pricing, this is what Adam calls the "CBD tax". At least they didn't try to make us pay for the bowls that we ate out of.

Seating was fairly spacious. There weren't any other customers there even though it was 6pm. Although fine as is, once we started eating our meal, we noticed how lacking the ventilation was.

Despite the ability to only have one complimentary sauce per bowl, I was surprised to see a miniature sauce station at the back of the restaurant, thereby making the one sauce per bowl rule null and void.

I made my usual signature sauce :).

Our meals came out about 20 minutes later, a little long for malatang, especially when there were no other customers.

He and I both had similar ingredients and both picked original broth (not risking another spice incident). The only major difference  in our bowl was the fact that he opted for egg noodle whilst I opted for rice noodles. As a frequent consumer of wanton noodle soup, egg noodle is quite temperamental when cooking and sometimes it is a challenge to cook it just right to retain the right amount of bounce. Unfortunately here, it was definitely overcooked and quite soggy.

My dish fared a lot better. The rice noodles were far more resistant to being overcooked and had a fairly consistent texture. The beef was overcooked and quite chewy, but the veggies, fish balls and tofu were alright. The cheesy sausage had very little cheese in it.
