Fifth Season - South Brisbane

Got brunch last week at The Fifth Season Cafe in South Brisbane. Since hearing that it was a Japanese inspired cafe, it topped my list of places to go for breakfast and I was super excited to try it out. The shopfront itself is very small and situated under a block of apartments. Seating is open air so there is no air conditioning during the summer months.

The menu was short but contained an assortment of Japanese inspired breakfast options such as sandos and kaarage. The drinks menu was available behind the counter.

Our drinks arrived fairly quickly, my companion had a Latte and I had a Whipped Brew. Both were fairly strong and had good body to it. I really enjoyed how creamy and rich the whipped brew was, it tasted just like an icy cappuccino.

It took a little while for our food to come out.

This was the Kaarage Chicken Benedict. I was super excited to try this but noted right away that it came on sourdough toast rather than croissant as indicated on the menu. When I asked why it wasn't a croissant, I was told that they had sold out but exchanged it to sourdough instead. Given that one of the reasons I ordered this dish was because of the croissant element, this was fairly disappointing and it would have been a lot better if they had advised us of this and given us the option to re-decide rather than making a decision for us. Having said that, the chicken was crisp with a thin batter and moist interior. Eggs were done really well with a poached runny centre, but I was fairly disappointed that there was only one slice of bread to go with the dish.

The other dish we shared was Mushrooms on Toast. This came with fried eggs and parsley oil on the toast. The mushrooms were flavoursome and the eggs were fried wonderfully. For the price point of $12, this was a very decent breakast.

Price Range: $15 - $25pp

Taste: 6/10 (points deducted for croissant debacle)
Value: 7/10
Service: 5/10
Environment: 5/10
