Ending our Sydney trip with Korean BBQ, it is only fitting that we begin our first Perth trip of the year again with Korean BBQ. Having done some research beforehand I found that the most popular and highest rated KBBQ in town appeared to be Palsaik. As we were not entirely sure of our landing time, I was unable to make a booking.
Arriving at about 7pm, the place was packed. We got a number and added our name to the list of people waiting.
The line took over an hour, enough time for our stomachs to almost digest itself whilst we were thoroughly acquainting ourselves with the menu. We were so sure of ourselves that by the time we were seated, we immediately requested to order.
Without a second wasted, the gas was lit.
And the BBQ was set.
Sides began pouring onto our table as we commenced grazing happily on green salad, sprout salads and kimchi along with our rice.
First up came our order of pork belly. Although we would have expected a reasonable amount of fat content in the cut, this was extraordinarily high, with at least 75% by quantity to be fat with the residual as meat. It really stoked the fire and burned quickly. We would definitely prefer a leaner cut in the future.
We also shared a two person combo which came with three set meats.
Marinated Beef Brisket was my favourite of the night. Although still fattier than I would have preferred, the delicate thin slices always make for wonderful grilled sheets of paper thin meat. Bonus points for delectable sweet soy marinade.
As if to contrast the brisket, this was the Marinated Flank Skirt. Thicker, leaner and meatier, they were also doused with soy marinade, but erred on the chewier side of the spectrum. I did however love how fresh the meat was.
The marinated pork neck had far less fat content than the pork belly. It had a smooth texture that retained its moisture well despite being on the bbq for a fair amount of time. I quite liked this cut even without the crispy skin which can be found on belly cuts. Might have to make the switch to this next time.
Our set combo came with soup. We had the spicy miso soup option, it was really thick and contained more fillings of cabbage, onion and tofu than it did soup, so it filled us up quite a bit. Would have preferred if the soup contained a bit more liquid than solid though.
Even though I knew we had over ordered, I was hungry and couldn't resist ordering an extra serve of kimchi pancake. It was crispy on the outside, but a little doughy on the inside and the kimchi was slightly bland. Perhaps dipping sauce would have helped, but more flavour would have been nice.
