Last dinner of 2018 and Adam and I wanted to shake things up by trying something different for a change. As if on queue, we received simultaneous invitations to try out the food at Sabrosso Tacos and Tequila on LaTrobe Street in Paddington. Always keen to try something new, we headed over there to get some Mexican before braving the New Years' Eve crowds.
The space was large and covered what appeared to be two shopfronts, it was colourful as you would expect from a Mexican restaurant. Central to the store was of course, the bar. The shopfront was largely open air and during the hot summer, flies were a slight distraction.
A table was set aside for us, and hot sauce was in abundance.
The menu consisted of one two sided sheet, one side dedicated to drinks, the other to food. I don't often have Mexican food, so I only recognised some of the food on the menu, making a good opportunity to try some new things. Drinks were also very South American, with heaps of Tequila and Margarita options.
Ordering with our waitress, drinks came first. From left to right we have the Strawberry Margarita, the Mexican Iced Tea and of course an Espresso Martini. Trying all three, I can definitely say that these drinks are potent. Not usually a fan of margaritas, the saltiness really brought out the sweetness of strawberry. Mexican Iced Tea didn't actually contain tea but had both tequila and corona in it making for a strong combo. Espresso martini was sweet and really topped it off.
Halfway through our drinks, food came and it was a feast.
First up was the slow cooked beef Chimichangas. Filled with slow cooked beef, cheese and beans, deep fried then served with rice, salsa, salad and sour cream, no wonder it's a Deadpool favourite. The pastry was quite flaky and layered without being overly oily. Meat was moist and generous in portion, though I would have liked it to have a little more cheese to glue the meat together. Sides of rice and salad were wholesome and fresh.
Our next dish was the Smoky Chicken Quesadillas filled with chicken pieces, onions, capsicum, pineapple, guacamole and cheese, again with sides of salad and rice. I liked the grilled flatbread which had just the right amount of chicken and cheese inside. The smokey flavours worked so well with stringy cheese, this was the highlight of my meal.
It's hard to get Mexican without Tacos, so we had three to share. At 3 for $16, these were quite a good deal. We had the slow cooked pork, shredded beef and smokey chicken. Flatbread was the weakest of the three we had and it was a little dry and brittle compared to the other two that we had. Having said that, the fillings were very tasty. Both the pork and beef were meaty and stringy, but my favourite was without a doubt the smoky chicken which came topped with avocado, tomato and chipotle mayo. Compared to the others, this had the ideal balance of moisture with meat in the taco. I really enjoyed it.
No meal with Adam is complete without dessert, and so we had churros. Fresh out of the deep frier and super hot, served with cream and hot chocolate fudge, this is what dreams are made of. The hot dough was coated in spicy cinnamon and sugar, steaming fresh. It melted the cream and heated the chocolate we dipped it in, a wonderful way to end the meal.
Espresso and matcha were invited guests of Sabrosso Tacos and Tequila, however all opinions as always are solely our own.
