Espresso & Matcha's Epicurean Quest - Melbourne: Kyo Tea

Second stop after landing, afternoon tea at 3.45pm after lunch at 3pm. We made a beeline for Kyo Tea House, the Japanese tea and dessert bar with a cult like following, all for good reason - Matcha. Situated at the base level of the Emporium, it definitely attracted a crowd at peak afternoon tea time. Thankfully our bellies were reasonably full so no one was injured.

Waiting in line gave us a good opportunity to weigh up our options, of which there were many.

My the afternoon, quite a few desserts were sold out already, but luckily the one I had my eye on was still available.

Ice cream was also available, in a multitude of flavours. My interest though, of course, was fixated on the four different intensities of matcha (even though I am somewhat perplexed why anyone would go for anything less than extreme).

Ordering at the counter, it was a short wait before our order was ready for collection. Never had so much green on one table before.

Drinks wise, we had the hot houjicha latte and the matcha float. Between the two, I preferred the hot houjicha for its warm toasty flavours which soothed and comforted me. It was only lightly sweetened and the milk was very creamy but didn't detract from the strong flavours of tea. He liked the matcha float though, with its pristine swirl of soft serve and sharp matcha taste.

Actual food consisted of matcha tiramisu and super intense matcha ice cream. Despite our adoration for the matcha tiramisu with its foamy light mascarpone cheese and green tea soaked ladyfinger, we were both liked the sharp strong gelato more. It was intense without being overbearing, bitter without overcoming the mild sweetness and struck a wonderful balance.
