Espresso & Matcha's Epicurean Quest - Perth: La Capannia Scarborough

Every time Iron Fist and I go to work at Perth, we make a point to take the time to go see the west coast sunset. Usually we watch it at Freemantle, but this time we decided to shake things up and go to Scarborough. It was a most welcome change, with a far more developed and family friendly setup. Finishing up at about dinner time, we wandered around to see what the dinner options were. As refined as he is, I didn't think that streetside kebabs would suit him, so we walked until we found a proper sit down restaurant. Along the Esplanade, we wandered until we stumbled upon La Capannia, a fairly new addition to the strip, serving hearty Italian fare.

The restaurant was huge and seating was spacious, with indoors and outdoor seating, we opted for indoor but were lucky enough to still have a table with a view. It must have been popular, as our waitress asked that we vacate our table within an hour and a half of seating. With our decision making ability, this was easily done.

The menu was as you would expect in an Italian restaurant, there was an ample selection of pizzas and pastas. Our usuals were of course, on the menu, which made choosing fairly simple.

Drinks wise, Iron Fist detracted from his red wine to try out some Rose from Mary River, whereas I had some bubbles, a wonderful addition to the view of dusk.

Food soon came and filled our tables. We hungrily dug in.

Our pizza of the evening was La Montanara, containing mozzarella cheese, smoked scamorza, Italian sausage, mushrooms and Italian truffle paste, this could have been a spectacular pizza. Whilst toppings were quite generous, they were somewhat bland. The truffle paste was nearly absent and I needed to really focus hard to get a taste of it. Mushrooms could have been fresher and was also a bit lacking in taste, but I still liked the meatiness of the sausage.

As a fan of gnocchi, Iron Fist chose the Il Classico, homemade gnocchi in butter and sage sauce finished with black pepper and shaved parmesan.  Although a fairly basic dish, this also came out pretty bland with only salt and pepper taste really coming through. parmesan, although usually a really strong, sharp cheese, the flavours didn't really come through. The gnocchi also had a really mashed potato like texture.

We had two sides, chips and green salad. I liked the chips which were fried with skin on. They were crispy and lightly salted. Salad was small for a side, but greens were reasonably fresh but the vinegarette was a little on the sweeter side.
