Espresso & Matcha's Epicurean Quest - Melbourne: La Camera

Had a brief interlude after lunch where we worked really hard to digest the food we had already eaten before embarking on our quest for dinner. Wanting to try out somewhere with not only good food, but a good view of the city (seeing as we were doing the tourist thing), I did some hunting online and opted for La Camera at Southgate before our Jazz show that evening.

We got there for our early reservation. Our table was situated outside but the view was quite obstructed by the hanging plastic on the balcony. We were seated promptly, menus were extensive, but service was a bit brusque. It took quite a while for us to get the attention of staff before we could make our order.

We were surprised when the entrees and mains all came at once, which overloaded our table and made it a little difficult to navigate with the share plates.

Our starters were the Arancini with minced beef and mozzarella. The coating was thin and crispy but the insides were largely just plain white rice. There was hardly any minced beef and mozzarella, which made it quite bland. Only saving grace was the mayonnaise which added some flavour and moisture to it.

Our shared pizza was the Capricciosa, topped with mozzarella, artichoke, prosciutto, olive, mushroom and olive oil, it was a nice combination of flavours and the toppings were reasonably generous. The let down though was the pizza base, which was dry, crisp and hard. If this could be improved, we would have enjoyed the pizza far more.

Our final shared main was the Tortelloni Allo Scoglio, for the price of  $34.50, we had four pieces of crab, prawn and ricotta filled pasta with saffron butter sauce topped with sliced garlic, fresh herbs and
fresh tomato. It was expensive for a dish of pasta, and could have been worth it with those kind of fillings, sadly the pasta was very thick and firm with not too much filling inside. Whilst I could distinguish the crab, prawn and ricotta inside each piece, it didn't taste overly fresh and was overpowered by the saffron butter. It was so promising, but ultimately a bit disappointing.
